Half Rotten and Decayed
Dominik van Reich was one half of the late-'80s/early '90s cult German electro duo yelworC. (Uh, read it backwards to get an idea of what they were interested in.) amGod is (was, at this point) his solo project, not dissimilar in style to yelworC.The high point of this disc, recently rereleased as part of an overly ambitious four-CD box set--especially for a band that only ever put out two albums--is van Reich's rollicking cover of Arthur Brown's "Fire." You know, the song that begins "I am the god of hellfire / And I bring you..." It's been covered a thousand times, but amGod speed it up and add a healthy dose of electronic evil to an already devilish song. Sure, it's cheesy, but in an exhilarating way.
